PEN LAI, designed by renowned architect Xu Chunyi, embodies a natural, unadorned aesthetic. The architecture features a square exterior with a circular interior, framed within defined boundaries yet opening up with large windows that invite the tranquility of blank spaces, allowing the imagination to soar. As the seasons change and time flows, the movement of wind and light brings forth stories waiting to unfold, revealing vibrant colors in the interplay of shadows.
Introduction
Though it may seem close yet out of reach, the unique charm within this simple square-box structure creates a sense of place that feels distinctly different from everyday life. Here, there are no grand mountains or sweeping vistas, yet it evokes a feeling of otherness that sets it apart from typical accommodations. Much of the "framed view" is transient, and we can only hope that the moments spent here leave a lasting imprint on our hearts.
While it may not boast exquisite craftsmanship, the design is full of thoughtful details. Any shortcomings in construction are part of the building's character. It stands as a place where, in the right moment, you can embrace the "freedom" and "presence" of the Hualien-Taitung Valley.
